How often should I have my carpet cleaned?
How often you get your carpet cleaned depends on your situation. Those with children, pets or large families will need more frequent cleanings. Some carpet manufacturers require regular carpet cleaning as part of the warranty. It is always best to have your carpet cleaned before it looks dirty, though every 12-24 months is fairly standard.

What method should I select?
There are several types of carpet cleaning involving different uses of chemicals, heat, agitation and drying. Each type presents unique strengths in terms of pure cleaning power and carpet restoration as well as different levels of expense. A&J uses IICRC Standards when selecting a cleaning method, though Truck-Mounted Hot Water Extraction is the type most often recommended by carpet mills.

Should I apply a protector?
Carpet protector is an excellent choice for families with children or pets and is often part of a warranty requirement. It makes cleaning easier and helps to prevent stains. Protector, however, wears off with vacuuming, cleaning and foot traffic.

When is a good time to have my carpet cleaned?
Whenever it fits into your schedule and lifestyle. Keep in mind that a professional cleaning takes 4 to 24 hours to completely dry.

How do I select a contractor?
The best way to select a contractor is through referrals - both from friends and your carpet retailer. It is also important to find out how long a company has been in business, if they offer any guarantee and if they hold any national certifications.

How much does it cost?
Cost depends on the area cleaned, method of cleaning and condition of the carpet. Think about how dirty your carpet is, when you last had it cleaned, and if you have any spots or stains that need to be removed. It costs a certain amount of money to bring a technician, truck and supplies to every job, no matter what the size. For A&J, that minimum charge is $100.00. IICRC Standards require dry vacuuming, pre-spotting, pretreatment of carpet fibers, truck-mounted hot water extraction cleaning, application of protector, if requested, and grooming of the carpet. The cost of these services is $.35 per square foot. Spots such as Kool-Aid, rust and urine require additional treatment above and beyond basic cleaning. This cleaning is priced based on the amount of time and material required. Carpet protector, such as Scotchguard or Teflon, are $.15 per square foot, while steps cost $2.00 each. Complete estimates can be done over the phone and then confirmed by the technician when they arrive at your home.
